Mission Beach - Children building sandcastles in the shallows

Mission Beach

16 September 2016

Mission Beach consists of a beautiful area of coastline comprising four pristine beaches off the Coral Sea. It lies approximately 2 hours drive south of Cairns. Mission Beach Village is a popular tourist centre with the usual delightful cafes and shops, and tours and activities can be booked from there.

At the time I visited Mission Beach a tropical storm was threatening, although it never actually arrived, and I found the reflections of the storm clouds on the wet sand to be quite mystical. The Mission Beach photos can be found under the Queensland gallery category via the drop down Gallery box.

The Dunk Island resort, 10 kilometres off shore from Mission Beach, was virtually flattened when Cyclone Yasi blew through, and some damage also extended to the Mission Beach area where some trees can be seen uprooted along the shoreline. The water taxi still visits Dunk Island from Wongaling Beach and visitors can have lunch, a wine or beer or a coffee at the licenced, although basic, Sunset Café (open mainly long weekends and holidays), adjacent to the jetty on the sandy beach.
