Includes images of Margaret River and Privelli Beach, Wave Rock, Monkey Mia, Broome, The Pilbara, Kimberley (includes Windjana and Geiki Gorges), Kununurra and Lake Argyle and the Ord River.
Beautiful pristine coastline with acqua ocean, blue skies, white sand and red cliffs. Adjacent to Monkey Mia at Shark Bay Marine Park.
Older photos from around 2000, best view in smaller format as they may not enlarge well.
Geiki Gorge is on the Fitzroy River, in the Kimberley. accessed from the Great Northern Highway. Good to get there to take the first boat in the morning (before the ripples appear on the river).
Hamelin Pool is located in the world heritage listed Shark Bay region of Western Australia. The stromatolites at Hamelin Pool were created by cyanobacteria and first appeared 3.5 billion years ago when oxygen was scarce. As the colonies expanded they released oxygen to the atmosphere which led to air breathing life forms to evolve.
The Pinnacles North of Perth on the coastal road, The Pinnacles desert is accessed via Cervantes, and covers an area of approximately 190 hectares, is around 60 meters above sea level, and contains thousands of limestone Pinnacles, some up to 5 meters high.
Swimming with the Whaleshark. A commercial tour out of Coral Bay on the central western coast of WA. I need to acknowledge the underwater photos taken by a fellow swimmer as I didn't have an underwater camera, and frankly if I did, by the time I got over the shock of jumping into the deep ocean, trying to keep track of the guide with his arm in the air, keeping the required 3 metres away from the 'fish', I don't think I could have dealt with an underwater camera anyway.
These images are of the damming of the Ord River and creation of Lake Argyle. The original homestead has been removed from the now flooded valley and recreated on higher land and is accessible to the public. There are still a few cattle and wallabies which missed relocation, living on the peaks of mountains above the level of the lake. This enormous project has created opportunities to capture the rains in the wet season for the now thriving agriculture industry in Kununurra.
The Bungle Bungles or The Purnululu National Park covers approximately 240,000 hectares. It is a World Heritage Site in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. (Photos in this gallery are amongst those taken around the year 2000 or earlier, and are included more for their interest rather than quality and are best viewed in small format rather than enlarging).
Margaret River can hardly be categorized as Outback Australia, however, it is in the West, and I have included it. Margaret River is located in the far south west corner of Western Australia and is particularly renowned for its wine.
Wave Rock is a natural rock formation shaped like a tall breaking ocean wave which forms the north side of a hill known as "Hyden Rock", which is part of the Hyden Wildlife Park. A wall lies above Wave Rock and collects and funnels rainwater to a storage dam.
The Pilbara is a large, dry, thinly populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is noted for its vast mineral deposits, particularly iron ore. It includes some of the world's oldest rock formations and gorges.
The Gibb River road stretches 700 kms through the central Kimberley Plateau. It can become very corrugated and restrictions can be expected during the wet season.
The photographs in this gallery are among those taken earlier around the year 2000 and are included more for their interest than their quality. Best viewed in small view, as it is not possible to capture the fine details that the camera has not captured in the first place.
