The Painted Desert
80 million years ago was an ancient sea bed. The land has been pushed up then eroded away to reveal the coloured shales under the surface. It is on the Arckaringa pastoral lease and is also known as The Arckaringa Hills. Situated east of the Stuart Highway between Coober Pedy and Alice Springs. Accessed via a road heading east from Cadney Homestead.
Road to The Painted Desert from Cadney Homestead
The road into The Painted Desert stretches from Cadney Park on the Stuart Highway to the Oodnadatta Track. The section referred to as The Painted Desert commences from Arckaringa Station, approximately mid way along the track.
