This latest gallery should have been part of my original set up, but I have never been great at creating efficient photo filing systems, and the images disappeared into the mayhem. In the process of creating the location maps recently, they re-emerged.
Heron Island is a tiny coral cay situated about 89 kilometres off the coast of central Queensland, usually accessed by boat from Gladstone. It is now a national park.
At the time of my visit it consisted of a small resort, no roads, no shops, no mobile reception (still the case) and it co-existed seamlessly with the Queensland University Heron Island Research Station.
My understanding is that now the resort has expanded, as is the case with most beautiful places as they become better known and more people visit, and it can now be accessed also by seaplane and helicopter. Such is progress.
I found it a wonderful island to visit to watch the birds, turtles nesting, coral (you can snorkel off the beach or go diving), and are happy to live without a mobile phone and other digital paraphernalia which form such a major part of modern living.
And did I mention the sunsets ???
